Scouts from Troop 33 in DeKalb load canoes for the start of another paddling day at Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota.

Scouts find adventure
at Boundary Waters

Boy Scout Troop 33 of DeKalb enjoyed an exciting high adventure trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota in June 2018. It was an exciting summer adventure that took Scouts paddling into a unique wilderness area.

Eight scouts and leaders took the trip: Cohen Barnes, Ken Chesser, Payton Chesser, Caeden Keith, Austin Petrie, Sean Walters, Carol Walther and Seth Wickens-Walther.

Their itinerary began at Moose Lake near Ely, Minnesota, and included 25 lakes, many of them skirting the Canadian border. The canoe route covered a paddling journey of more than 50 miles. Each day they canoed to a different campsite offering them a new opportunity for exploration and adventure. Great fishing, cold water swims, and the thrill of jumping from a giant rock cliff into the icy waters were among the many activities.

Some lakes were connected by waterways with rushing rapids for very exciting paddling or carefully walking canoes through difficult waters. Other lakes, separated by land, required portaging steep rugged trails. Then they carried canoes, food, plus camping and personal gear from one lake to another.

Some days were tougher than others. Working as a team, supporting one another, achieving challenge after challenge, they forged a strong bond. Fellowship and accomplishment was found throughout their adventure. It created an unforgettable experience.

Scouts earned the 50-Miler Award, a special honor for paddling 50 miles plus dedicating several hours to service projects. Their service efforts focused on clean-up projects at Pioneer Park in Kirkland, Sycamore Park, Cortland Park and sections of the DeKalb Nature Trail.

Troop 33's other paddling adventures for 2018 included the historic Hennepin Canal, Lake Shabbona and the Mississippi River.

Chartered by the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Troop 33 continues a long tradition of exciting outdoor programs. Visit Troop 33 online at: http://troop33dekalb.net.
