RICHARD MCCANN MEMORIAL - FREE
March 17, 2013.
Richard J. "Dick" McCann, 73, of Wheaton, Ill., passed away peacefully March 12, 2013, at his home. He was born May 4, 1939, in DeKalb, IL.
Dick was owner and founder of McCann Industries Inc. and a generous supporter of Boy Scouts.
As a boy he joined Pack 115 at Glidden School and then joined our very own Troop 33. He cherished memories of his mother as den leader. His Boy Scout experiences instilled in him a love for adventure and the great outdoors.
He enjoyed summers at Camp Rotary MacQueen, 1953 National Scout Jamboree in California, and 1954 Region 7 Canoe Base at Boulder Jct, Wisconsin.
He donated $1,000,000 (one million dollars) to build Lake Gladys at the Adventure Camp near Rochelle. Our Scouts enjoyed canoeing, swimming, and fishing there this past summer. Buses from Camp Lowden took them to Lake Gladys.
He named the lake after his mother, Gladys Ruth McCann, and dedicated it to all mothers who have served Scouting. Dick McCann loved Scouting; as a boy, a father, and grandfather.
He was humble and generous, always enthusiastic. We will miss his energy.
His Scouting spirit will forever echo through the sounds of boys at Lake Gladys.
Visitation is 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at First Lutheran Church. A memorial service follows at 2:00 p.m.
Interment of cremated remains will be at Fairview Cemetery.
