SHABBONA WEEKEND - $ 10.00 plus food
November 2-3, 2013.
Cabins are reserved at Chief Shabbona Forest Preserve for cooking, eating, instruction, sleeping, or you can choose to sleep in tents or survival shelters. Your option. Patrols will cook up some great meals plus everyone will be kept busy with things like stars, dogs, and compasses. This action packed weekend is filled with lots of fun things to do. You won't want to miss it! Also, don't forget to bring your fishing gear too.
ORIENTEERING -
An Orienteering hike will complete First Class requirement #2 on Saturday afternoon. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.)
STAR PARTY -
A "Star Party" Saturday night will be hosted by the Northwest Suburban Astronomers (with an awesome assortment of high tech telescopes). Highlights will include Venus, Double Star Cluster in Perseus, Andromeda Galaxy (M31), Globular Cluster M15, Open Cluster M34 and the Pleiades Star Cluster among others. We'll drive to Afton Forest Preserve, 13600 Crego Rd, DeKalb for this activity. Hope for clear skies.
RESCUE DOGS -
The Midwest K9 Emergency Response Team will bring in several rescue dogs for a program on Sunday. Watch how fast a bloodhound can track a fresh scent to find a lost victim. They will explain all the details of how it all works. Some fascinating information.
