OKLAHOMA TORNADO PROJECT - $ 150.00
July 1-7, 2013.

The Fujita Scale is used to rate tornado activity on a ratio of EF-1 to EF-5, with EF-5 being the most powerful storm level. It is rare for an EF-5 tornado to form.

On Monday May 20 an EF-5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma killing 24 people. Eleven days later on Friday May 31, an EF-5 tornado struck near El Reno, Oklahoma killing 19 people.

These tornados struck only a few miles apart, causing over a billion dollars in damage, leaving hundreds injured and thousands homeless.

Last year Troop 33 Scouts responded to an EF-4 tornado in Harrisburg, Illinois and twice responded to Hurricane Sandy on the east coast. Our boys put in over 1,000 man hours working to help others recover from national disasters.

A national disaster has struck in epic proportions. A major project lies in Oklahoma for those willing to work. This project is during the week of 4th of July. We will help people in Oklahoma recover from two EF-5 tornados.

    Caving Adventure -
    August 24-25, 2013.

Maquoketa Caves is Iowa's most unique state park filled with caves, limestone formations and rugged bluffs. Caves vary from the 1,100' Dancehall Cave with walkways and lighting system to smaller caves of all different sizes and shapes explored by crawling. Bring two small flashlights, old clothes, and old shoes. Whatever you wear is guaranteed to get plenty dirty.

A 6-mile trail system links caves, formations, and overlooks, including the dramatic "Natural Bridge" which stands nearly 50 feet above Raccoon Creek, the 17-ton "Balanced Rock", plus great woodland areas, abundant flora and fauna (plantlife and wildlife).

We used to visit the park almost every year, but due to a problem with the health of bats, caves were closed for a few years. Now interpreters give guided tours to facilitate the White Nose Syndrome (WNS) Awareness Program. It's a short program meant to help prevent the spread of White Nose Syndrome by humans. Attendance at the program is required for those who plan to enter the caves. It's a special educational part of the trip.

We ask everyone to bring a flashlight, plus a small second source of light as back up, just in case. A penlight would do, even a cell phone might work. If your first light fails, you need that second one.

The caves at Maquoketa State Park are a great place to enjoy and explore.
